Forecast for fall: perfect paint

(NC)-Painting is one of the most impactful and cost effective ways to drastically change the look of a room. Adding a quick coat of paint allows you to set the tone of your home, but before picking up a brush, consider the following tips courtesy of The Home Depot Canada.

Getting started - Before choosing a paint colour, consider the natural and artificial light in each room. Keep in mind that lighter colours tend to make a room appear larger, while darker colours create a cozy atmosphere.

Matte or glossy - Paint sheen is the amount of light reflected from the paint's surface. Flat or matte paint absorbs light and is typically used for interior walls, while glossy paint reflects it, making it perfect for shining exterior surfaces.

Sheen scenes - Paint is available in various sheens. Flat and matte sheens give a smooth and subtle finish, working well in living rooms and bedrooms. Consider an eggshell, low-lustre or satin sheen for rooms where washable walls are needed.

Fall trends

Fireside - The warm colours of hearth fire, namely red, orange and yellow, define this palette with subtle hints of purple and pink acting as accents. Work the look by picking a main colour and building around it with hues from the same colour family.

New Artisan - Create a rustic feeling with styles that look like they've been around forever. Traditional finishes, such as bronze and copper, lead the way along with the return of gold and brass.

Up Country - The return of white washing and antique grey finishes reflects this trend. Light-infused rooms work better with blue- or grey-based whites, while yellow or cream-based whites provide warmth and brighten dark rooms. Complete the project with grey and stone hues.
