• Install a programmable thermostat, which allows you to better control the temperature in your house. For example, instead of having the furnace run all day long when no-one's home, you can set the thermostat at a lower temperature between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. – saving energy and thus greenhouse gas emissions.
• Ask your building supply retailer to show you their line of green products for your renovation needs. Eco-friendly construction not only helps create a better outdoor environment, it can also contribute to a healthier indoor environment for you and your family by using products that contain fewer harmful chemicals.
• Look for paints that are lowest in volatile organic compounds. VOCs are chemical compounds that vaporize into the atmosphere. Natural paints and finishes, which give off little odour or fumes, are made from natural raw ingredients such as water, plant oils and resins. Because they give off fewer chemicals, natural paints are better for your health, and especially for babies and children, and better for the environment. Allergies or sensitivities to these paints are less and are the safest for you and for the environment.
